Our family tends to be more sensitive to processed wheat, and I definitely prefer treats that are easier on the gut. These easy einkorn brownies do the trick every time.
I love experimenting with healthier ingredients like einkorn flour, turning our favorite treats into nourishing options for the whole family. It’s incredibly rewarding to create desserts that not only taste delicious but also contribute to our overall well-being.
I use sourdough and/or einkorn in all of my homemade baked goods for those exact reasons. Although einkorn is a softer wheat that can sometimes yield slightly different results, this recipe gives a chewy, fudgy brownie every time while using a nutrient-dense flour.
Why Bake With Einkorn?
Einkorn flour is an ancient grain that has been around for centuries, dating back to the earliest days of agriculture. It’s known for its rich nutrient profile, high protein content, and easier digestibility compared to modern wheat varieties. This makes it a great alternative for individuals with wheat sensitivities or gluten intolerance who still want to enjoy baked goods.
Einkorn’s historical significance lies in its pure and untouched nature, unchanged by modern hybridization. With its delicate gluten structure, it’s gentler on the gut and may be easier for some people to digest. If you’re seeking healthier baking options, einkorn flour offers a nutrient-dense alternative to processed wheat flours.
If you’re hesitant about trying einkorn flour or making the switch to healthier baking options, I encourage you to take a leap of faith! These einkorn brownies are a fantastic way to introduce your loved ones to the world of wheat alternatives and ancient grains. Savor the familiar decadence of brownies while benefiting from the wholesome goodness of nutrient-dense einkorn wheat.
The Health Benefits of Einkorn Flour
Einkorn contains a higher protein content than modern wheat, providing essential nutrients for a healthier diet. Einkorn flour is rich in nutrients such as carotenoids, tocotrienols, and other beneficial compounds that support overall health.
Eating baked goods that are made with einkorn flour in lieu of processed all-purpose flour has greatly improved my digestion. I almost always subsititute einkorn for all-purpose flour (even if it’s organic), when I’m baking a quick treat or dish like these brownies, sausage gravy made with einkorn flour, or sourdough einkorn banana bread.
The Perfect Einkorn Brownie Recipe
These einkorn brownies are the epitome of chewy and fudgy, serving as a healthier alternative to traditional brownies. The use of einkorn flour lends these treats a delightful texture and a boost in nutritional value, making them even more irresistible!
These brownies are a prime example of how easy it is to make a positive change in your baking routine without sacrificing flavor or simplicity.
So, go ahead and give these einkorn brownies a try. You’ll be amazed at how simple it is to create a healthier, family-friendly dessert that’s sure to become a staple in your home. Your loved ones will thank you for it, and your gut will too!
Ingredients List (and substitutions)
- Butter: I’m convinced the butter in this recipe is what gives these brownies the perfect texture. You don’t want to substitute it, trust me.
- Organic brown sugar: Can be substituted interchangeably for coconut sugar.
- Organic cane sugar: Substitute the cane sugar for all coconut sugar or sucanat if you want to keep your sweetener completely unrefined.
- Vanilla extract: I like to make my own vodka-based vanilla extract but of course, store-bought will work just as well.
- Eggs: Any brand of large egg will do! We love using eggs from our own chickens because we know exactly where they came from.
- Einkorn flour: What makes these brownies special! Although, you can substitute all-purpose flour if you want.
- Raw cacao powder: I prefer raw cacao because it’s higher in magnesium and is much less processed, but any cocoa powder can be used.
- Sea salt
- Mini chocolate chips: Can be omitted, but they really do make these brownies so much better! I like Enjoy Life or Thrive’s mini chocolate chips. Thrive Market is a discount online grocery store that specializes in healthy foods, and they carry my favorite brand of einkorn flour as well! Step-by-Step Baking Instructions
Start by beating together the melted butter and sugars (I love my stand mixer). Next, add the eggs and vanilla and mix very well. If your melted butter was very hot, you will want to let it cool a bit before adding the eggs. Cooked eggs in brownie batter is no bueno.
Combine the einkorn flour, cacao powder, and sea salt in a smaller bowl, then add it to the wet ingredients. Mix just until you get a smooth batter.
Finally, fold in the mini chocolate chips. Spread the brownie batter into a well-greased 9×13 pan, and bake at 350 for 25 minutes.
Let cool completely (if you can), and devour!
