When searching for relevant tunes to use in this blog post, I knew I wanted this list of worship songs about humility to be unique and modern. Curating lists of new music from gifted worship artists is something I love to do. If you enjoy that too, then guess what? You’re in the right place.

Sadly, humility seems to be lacking in God’s church today. But He is the one who gives us every good gift and opportunity. You see, as human beings we struggle with this annoying little thing called self-reliance. It’s great to be confident, but that confidence shouldn’t come from ourselves.

Why songs about humility are important

James 4 is probably one of my favorite chapters in the Bible. It talks about humbling ourselves before God, and not letting our loyalty be divided between Him and the world.

Today’s culture tells us that looking out for our own interests is the “way to success.” But this passage tells us that boasting about ourselves and our own plans is the wrong way to go. James reminds us the importance of having humility if we want to someday be lifted up in honor.

So, let’s get into this list of songs about humility. They are in no particular order (except for the fact that I’m listing my own song last).

This isn’t just a selection of hymns, but a collection to inspire you to seek the Lord a little more deeply, and know that He holds ultimate control.

“Refiner” – Maverick City Music

“Refiner” is an intense prayer asking the Lord to purify our hearts and try us by fire. Going through this process requires true humility.

“The Prodigal Song” – Cory Asbury

“The Prodigal Song” is a cry of repentance and humility, expressing the desire to go back to a right place with God.

“Fall Down” – Harvest

“Fall Down” is a somber statement of willingness, one that sings of falling at the feet of Jesus. This third track on our list shows hunger for more of His presence.

“Abide” – The Worship Initiative

“Abide” is a song of dependence, telling of all the ways we are subject to the Lord, from the greatest to the smallest.

“You Remain” – Meredith Mauldin

“You Remain” brings into perspective the reality of Jesus and how great He truly is. This is a worship song that recognizes how fading and temporary our earthly gains are.

“All Is For Your Glory” – OneThing/Cory Asbury

“All Is For Your Glory” has become a favorite song of mine to sing while leading worship. It plainly tells the story of Jesus’ ultimate victory and authority, while expressing submission to His will and plan.

“Nothing Else” – Cody Carnes

“Nothing Else” is a song of true humility, of one basking in the presence of Jesus while asking forgiveness for selfish motives.

“It Is Well” – Bethel Music/Kristene DeMarco

“It Is Well” is a song of submission, a commanding of our souls to let go and trust the Lord with everything. The chorus is reminiscent of the traditional hymn but with an updated twist.

“Here I Am To Worship” – Tim Hughes

“Here I Am To Worship” is now considered a long time classic of humility and worship. It sings about our humble King coming to earth, and our own recognition of the price He paid for our sin.

“Humble” – Audrey Assad

“Humble” is an absolutely beautiful song of worship to our Savior, who wasn’t afraid to take on our brokenness. “We must decrease, You must increase” is one of the repeated lines.

“More Like Jesus” – Passion

“More Like Jesus” starts out telling Jesus’ own story of humility, then goes into a prayer asking to be more deeply conformed to His character.

“Even Unto Death” – Audrey Assad

“Even Unto Death” is a beautiful melody that captures the concept of humility in a different way. The lyrics convey a deep devotion to God and God alone.

“On The Altar” – UPPERROOM

“On The Altar” sings of fully consecrating ourselves and giving everything to the Lord. I believe that in order to actually pour ourselves out as an offering for Him, we need an understanding of the importance of humility.

“We Fall Down” – Chris Tomlin

At the very beginning of “We Fall Down”, the lyrics are “we fall down, we lay our crowns at the feet of Jesus.” It’s a simple song of worship that comes from a heart of humility.

“Simple Kingdom” – Brian & Katie Torwalt

“Simple Kingdom” is a reminder of the humble way Jesus came to earth and died for us, and challenges us to try and see things the the way God sees.

“Uncomplicated” – Hillsong Young & Free

“Uncomplicated” seeks to tell the simple way that God loves us, and how we should give him all we are in return.

“Beautiful” – Kari Jobe

“Beautiful” is a song that conveys a true heart of humility. It’s about not being afraid of brokenness and willingly letting go of ungodly things.

“Looking For A Savior” – United Pursuit

“Looking For A Savior” is a raw, vulnerable song. I love the way it expresses our need for a Savior in so many honest ways, and pushes us to truly behold the humility of Jesus.

“Glorious” – Cageless Birds

“Glorious” is a humble song of worship, showing awe of our Savior. “I bow low at the feet of my Savior, saying yes to the process of changing” is a favorite lyric that really pierced my heart the first time that I heard it.

“The Cost” – Rend Collective

“The Cost” is an upbeat song that pledges everything to Jesus. He is worth the cost of leaving our own desires behind.

“Heart’s Cry” – Chris Quilala

“Heart’s Cry” is just that–a cry to to become more like the Lord, and an acknowledgment of His holiness.

“I Will Sing” – Tiffany Dawn Brewer

Last on the list, is my own song, “I Will Sing.” About a year after my dad’s death, I needed to write a declaration of submission to the Lord despite the pain I felt.

I hope this playlist of songs about humility encourages you to stay humble and in submission to God. I’ve found that He has a funny way of helping us do that when we say we want to live fully devoted to Him. ๐Ÿ˜‰
